Secondary Growth

Italian Chestnut: Top 18.5" grown inside with natural spectrum energy saving bulbs. Irrigation system and timers.
This 15" Sycamore (London Plane tree) seedling started from seed this spring and is showing signs of secondary growth. I was excited about this type of tree from the beginning and they are not disappointing. So it has surpassed all the oaks in height. Only the Italian Chestnuts have it, but long stopped growing with leaves slowly turning golden brown. As these chestnuts were forced, sprouting on thanksgiving they are probably ready for a long winter sleep.

1: Sycamore Seedling- If you are going to attemp to grow this tree from seed expect a low success rate. for every ten seeds less then 1 will make it. So harvest a lot of seed it will need to be kept for 3 months at below 40 degrees keep them moist I use damped paper towel in clear zip lock bags. I think colder is better. Then in march or april expose to light I prefer those new energy saving bulbs natural spectrum. You should notice some green sprouting at which i separate and pot. It would make sense to separate seed early before bagging.
2: 4 sycamores to fight it out in tube in front of old Norfork Pine freed from climbing rose bushes.
3: Sycamore in tree tube next to wild choke berry that will probably get cut down.
bottom:This sugar maple planted in Bloomfield Connecticut last year shot up 3 feet reaching 7 feet.
This came as good news from my father in law who sprayed it diligently with deer repellent.
making it the 3rd largest tree in the project(Neo-earthworks).

First trees planted

"Pooky" my nick name for those who remember me.
Top: 2 corkscrew willows they where planted by my parents and I, with the dwarf spruce (not so dwarf) 42 years ago. They were the same height as the three of us respectively.
"John" the first red oak taken as acorn from maine- named after John Gasner( beginning 2nd year.)
"Suzy " - after Attwood one of my first Island friends not sure if it is from maine or Block Island also 2. Decided to give trees names after friends and celebrities. Also, when hanging out with Paul Slocum we thought the trees should be labeled kinetic art.
